Coolant pump repair

Post by distand »

Hello

Looking for any tips on how to install a new bearing on a universal coolant pump (part 300203). Does anyone have any practical experience on how to do that? I searched the threads but could not find anything on this

Thanks

You can buy the bearing and seal for about $140.00. When you add tax and shipping you've reached the routine cut-off point for determining when to repair or replace since a new unit is available for $318.00. Are you certain you want to rebuild? Not all "cores" are candidates for a successful rebuild. If the bearing and seal costs were negligible the decision would be a simple one, but this is not the case.
To answer your question more directly, no I do not have "do it yourself" experience because a bearing press is an extravagance few are equipped with.

Try getting the ID number off of the block and go directly to your closest Kabota tractor dealer. Chances are he could sell you the pump for less than the cost of a "marine" bearing and seal. He could definitely sell you the bearing and seal for far less. These engine parts are not really marine parts at all. They are Kabota tractor parts that are used all over the world and are not particularly expensive. Changing out the bearing and seal should not be that hard but you may find the the price of a new pump from a non marine source wouldn't make it worth the trouble of messing with it.

A good rule of thumb is about a third or less, so if a new marine sourced pump is $318.00 I would be surprised if it was much more than a hundred from Kabota, Steve.

The M25 is a D850 Kubota block, the M25XP is a D950 Kubota block. This ought to save you some bloody knuckles.

Thanks all. Already bought the Kubota pump. Just fixing the old one as a backup. Will let you know if I succeed.

How about posting the Kubota part number for our future reference. I'd be interested in the price also since the best OEM price I saw on the web was $318.00.

I talked to the Westerbeke rep at the Maine boat show yesterday and he also recommended replacing older pumps. FYI.

Now I guess my wife will want all new high heels. Gees, the cost!

Jim asked for part number - here it is

Kubota 15552-72030 fresh water pump will work in place of Universal 300203

I paid $75 for the Kubota part. I got it at dealsinapinch.com. Note that the Kubota pump is cast iron and the universal is aluminum (hence the reason for the $400 price I guess).

Will also need a gasket and pump nipple (UNV-301519)

Speaking of pumps, we have the Universal M25-5421. I know the Oberdorfer pump number is 202M-7, and has been discontinued and replaced by the 202M-07. Does anyone now if this is an exact replacement?

We plan some cruising to pretty remote areas this season and l'd like to carry spare pumps. I believe I have original pumps on my CD 31 and we'd like to carry spares.

Thank in advance

There are a huge number of M25's in Catalina 34's. Check their site. I've read their posts concerning water pumps in the past and they are very informative.
