I have a problem with the outboard engine on my dory 25'. Barnacles are getting in the water intake and clogging it up, not allowing for proper cooling. Has anyone had this problem before and have any suggestions as to what i can do to prevent it? Short of pulling the monsterous 15hp engine out of the water every time.
thanks for your help

barnacles on outboard

Re: barnacles on outboard
What I did is the following. Pull the motor and allow it to dry for a day. Then scrape off everything that is growing and get the lower unit as clean as possible. Three coats of outboard paint and three coats of anti fouling spray, clear. This holds up for a cuple of months with out dong anything. If you go over the side it will allow cleaning of the grass and sealife much simpler. NOt much more that I can think of that will help. If you hear of anything better let me know.
Smooth sailing.

I have a Johnson 9.9 on my CD25. When I bought the boat (last season) I cleaned the motor thoroughly and used Interlux Tri-Lux II anti-fouling paint on all underwater parts. This is available as a kit from marine stores which includes both primer and anti-fouling paint. I used one coat of primer and two of anti-fouling. Since that time I have had no problems with growth on the motor or paint adhesion. This year the prop was replaced. (dealer damaged it while servicing the engine) The new prop didn't have the paint and when I pulled the motor after about a month, the prop was completely covered with barnacles. The painted shaft continues to be barnacle free.
I hope this helps,
Brad

Re: barnacles on outboard
I've been using Pettit's Aluma Spray over a zinc chromate primer on my Johnson 9.9 for over 5 years with good results. I usually repaint annually giving the motor a good scraping and sanding before painting.
If I haven't used the boat for a while I will usually clean the prop and lower unit with a deck brush. As to keeping the barnacles off the best way is to use your boat often and inspect the intake on a regular basis. The outboard is a 1978 that is still kicking ( and smoking ) but should give me a couple more years with proper care.
