Cape Dory Registry alternative

Post by Dino »

As many of you know, the Cape Dory Registry was hacked some time ago and has been missed by some members.

I extracted the usable data from the hacked version and shared it in a Google spreadsheet. You should be able to access it via https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing.

The spreadsheet is sorted by length, model name, model year, date entered. The comments column is truncated.

The spreadsheet is currently shared as "view only". If the forum moderators would like to nominate other members to maintain it, I'd be happy to provide editing perms as appropriate. This solution is imperfect but may be useful until such time as another is offered.

I was unaware :(
You would think there would be some way to disable the link from our menu.

Our crack team is all-volunteer. I'm sure the web related issues will get resolved... stay tuned.

The registry itself has needed updating for a long time, as it was easy to add an entry and equally easy to forget to delete it or edit it when it, as appropriate.

I'll add that CDSOA members receive a hard copy Member Directory, pretty much 100% up to date on its publication date.

Wow, you're not kidding it got hacked. I had no idea since I'd not visited it in ages. Whew...what a mess. Surely Cathy or others have a master file though?

Well, so I looked at the Registry and see that Robert Morey is still listed as owning my Hull 729, that transfer took place a couple of years ago now. I thought we had been added but I guess not. Regrets. Somehow when we stand this thing back up we hope to be a line item again!

This site links to the Registry, but CDSOA, and more particularly Cathy, doesn't host or maintain it.

As many of you know, there were a number of regional Cape Dory owners' groups. CDSOA was formally organized by the Chesapeake folks; the California club (which originated the Cape Dory message board [thank you, Walt!]) was more loosely organized, the northeast folks held a significant rendezvous with no organization, etc. So while formally our organization traces back to the Chesapeake club, the message board and registry traces back to Walt and CCDOA. This board is open to non-CDSOA members because Walt set it up that way. So while it's now paid for and hosted by CDSOA, it remains an open resource for Cape Dory owners and those otherwise interested. (That said, I'll toss in a pitch for CDSOA membership here! Click the banner at the top of the page.)

In a perfect world, we'd have world peace, fair winds and following seas, no risk of collision at sea, light weight anchors that held no matter what, lights that lit when they were supposed to and vice versa, and a flawless website with a 100% up to date Registry.

Volunteer positions are available, within CDSOA and otherwise, if you'd like to help out with any of the above.

I'm wondering how old the information is that the spreadsheet was compiled from. We purchased our CD-33 in late July and entered it into the registry right away but we do not appear on the spreadsheet now.

The data I used to create the spreadsheet was as it appeared in hacked form on the date I extracted it, a day or so before my initial 20141203 post on this topic. That data contained several registry entries from Sept 2014.

If you're looking at the data from a PC you can sort by any of the columns. In this case, hover your mouse pointer over the "H" column header (Date), click the drop down arrow that appears and select sorting from Z to A. The newest item is one I manually entered. Just beneath it you'll see a number of entries from Sept 2014. I do not know whether some data that had existed at some time in the past was missing from the hacked data I extracted this from.

If you'd like to provide your data I'll enter it for you. If you'd like to become an editor of the data to enter it yourself, just ask the forum moderators to approve it and I'll grant the perms you and/or others they approve will need.

The message board, as with the rest of our web site, is on the internet. That in itself means that anyone can access it. You do not need to be a CDSOA member to use it but you do need to be a registered user (registration is free) to post anything on the message board.

The CDSOA (Cape Dory Sailboat Owners, Inc.) pays for the CDSOA's web site (the one you are visiting now) though much of it's content was originally compiled and put up on the web by Walt Bilofsky, one of the founding members of the CCDOA (California Cape Dory Owners Assn.), we have expanded on it greatly. For several years both web sites shared the same server, and the same web team members maintained both sites. That changed when the CDSOA got their own domain name -- capedory.org. And the CCDOA decided that they no longer wanted to maintain the information on their site and asked that we host and maintain it instead. We took over pretty much all of their material except the Registry of Boat Owners which is too difficult to maintain, too easy to hack and our web team, all volunteers with alot of other things to do (like spending our summers sailing), don't need that headache. If anybody else would like to host a NEW registry (the info in the old one is too out of date), great. We'll provide a link to it but you'll have to maintain it.

Skeep-

Done. Please verify entry accuracy. I noted in your blog an acquisition in 12/2012. Advise a day if you'd like, and an email if you want it included. Note the prior record for this vessel has been retained, yours has been added just beneath, thus retaining the vessel history.

Regards,
Dino
