Tying off halyards is beneficial to you (reducing wear and tear and noise) and your neighbors (noise). It's been a common practice to "help" those who may have "forgotten" to tie off their halyards by doing it for them. Sometimes you approach them while they are aboard and offer them some small stuff to get the job done themselves and there are other times when, after repeated friendly attempts, it becomes necessary to employ a dock gremlin with instructions to tie their halyards off for them. Of course tradition dictates that the dock gremlin use several yards of the finest fabric store remnants and use numerous knots to ensure a proper seamanlike result. Normally by the time the offender has cut the rats nest free even the most obtuse among us will begin to see the light.

Yeah, exactly right, noise and wear. Just eliminating the banging is worth it. Although I unstep the mast on the Ty for the winter, I'm always amazed at how many big boats that are stored with the mast up leave halyards banging away all winter long.

I guess you're all right. Figured I'd let the old halyards I've got just go ahead and bang around for a few more years. Plus, it's like a bit of familiar music score to me to hear them clanging in the yard. I will admit that there's nothing like tying off the main halyard on a larger vessel when ocean swells cause a yacht to shift at night. Has made for many a delightful nights' sleep tying that off and away from the mast!
