Differences between 25D and 27

Post by Bob Herrick »

As we've mentioned before on this list, Rita and I thoroughly enjoy sailing our Ty Senior out of Burnham Harbor in Chicago. At this stage of our lives, we are strictly daysailers and the Ty Senior met our initial criteria of a simple boat without the maintenance distractions of diesels, holding tanks, permanent heads, and without accommodations we never use, i.e. berths for sleeping, galleys, etc. We spend our time in the cockpit.

However...Rita's been talking lately about how nice it would be to have standing headroom and more privacy for the head. There's a curtain shielding the porta-potti but the air-sea rescue guys at Miegs Field and our neighbors have a clear shot below decks as we swing around the bouy and one does have to be somehwat of a contortionist to use the potti.

That said,we might consider moving up to a 25D or a 27 down the line. We've been aboard both designs, though not under sail. The large head in place of the v-berth always struck us as handy for our situation but I think the 27 is a bit prettier (so start heaving the tomatos) and there are more of them. Also, there's a beautiful 28 on the can next to us but I just don't see us using the amenities the 28 offers over the 27.

On the other hand, our friends think its idiotic to move from a 22 to a 25 or 27. They urge a 30.

As has been stated many times on this list, sailing characteristics of Alberg boats are very similar and again, we are familiar with the layout of the 25D and the 27.

Sooo...we'd be interested in your comments.

Bob & Rita:
Your friends must want to go sailing too! Of course, go for the 30! It is one of the top boats of the fleet. Consider Steve Alarcon's "Temerity" It has to be a perfect boat. You will see how much more you can enjoy sailing, and then overnighting in the weekends. Cheers.

Bob,
I have owned a CD25, CD27, and now have a CD30 Cutter. I should have bought the 30 first it's a great boat.

Well, I own a 25D, and have been aboard a 27 briefly, The 27 has more headroom, and a conventional layout, but I don't think it has a quarterberth. I also got the impression that the berths in the saloon were shorter than those in the 25D, which has two berths suitable for 6' 4" people like me, the quarterberth and stbd setee.

The cockpit in the 25d will handle 2 couples comfortably for daysailing, but that's it. Any more is a bit of a squeeze. If you're interested in entertaining more couples, or having them sleep over, go for the 30. However, the 30 is a much more substantial boat, and the increase in size translates to an increase in expense. ( bigger slip/more fuel/paint/bigger & heavier sails/ more complex rig ) Its a bigger jump to the 30.

If the increase in size concerns you, both the 25d and the 27 are
"big" for their size. If you can afford it, and think that you would eventualy go for a bigger boat than the 25d/27 anyway, I'd go for the 30 right now.

Of course, all the usual disclaimers apply.

As a daysailor the 25D would be great for you. You can escape from the weather for brief periods and the 25D head is huge. It is comfortable to use and would give you a place to clean up a bit before heading ashore. I agree with the other postings that "bigger is better" but a 25d would be a comfortable and affordable step up for a ty owner.

Before buying my 25D, I looked at several 27's and came to the conclusion that the V-berth would not be suitable quarters for us as my wife is slightly claustrophobic and the berth would undoubtedly become a "junk room". The 25D has a huge qtr. berth, large enough to stow all your gear, thereby allowing the boat to remain uncluttered and always shipshape. It's a perfect boat for day sailing, weekend getaways, or just hanging out. The boat systems are simple and manageable, thereby reducing potential headaches!

Having said all that, buy a 30 if it's a viable option. I sail frequently on my friend's CD30 and it's an unbelieveable boat.
