Engine stop remote control

Post by Dixon Hemphill »

I wrote earlier about getting my control to be easier to pull out and did get several suggestions but it now seems that I need a new cable and sheath for my CD28.

Can someone tell me where I can find one? I figure the length must be about 10 feet.

I assume you have the Volvo MD7A or B but I believe all the manual shutoffs are the same regardless of engine manufacturer. Have you tried simply lubing the cable? Every few years I put some oil down the cable and work it in best I can. In addition to keeping things moving smoothly, I hope it may help prevent corrosion. Inspect the cable run for kinks and the cable itself for damage (causing friction like if you set the anchor on it and pinched it).

Many large truck repair shops have custom cable facilities. There are many end fittings. Bring yours along with the old cable and they will make one for you. It really is everyday procedure for them. (At a fraction of the cost of sailboat shops !!!)

You just need to pull (or push) the fuel cutoff... on the MD7A the lever goes AFT, on my new Beta, the lever goes FORWARD. That pretty much eliminated the notion of just hooking the old cable up to the new motor.

My engine is a 2GM20F Yanmar and I am asking if anyone knows where I can buy a new cable and sheath. As I wrote earlier the remote control is almost impossible to pull out so that the engine stops

Defender has two

$75 is expensive, you could look at a tractor stop cable (eBay) but they will rust.

Hamilton has some at similar prices.

Hello Dixon:

I purchased a new Yanmar engine stop remote control cable from a local (Miami) Yanmar mechanic. You may want to check with a Yanmar mechanic in your area for parts availability unless you are looking for a generic cable. I do not at the moment recall the price I paid but I think it was below $70.

Thanks, Gary H I ordered a 10' remote cable for only $26.00 from the company you suggested.

Now if I can manage to remove the old one and install the new one I am good to go!

Many thanks to all who replied
