Easy Oil Change Gadget

Post by Scott Ritchey »

Just changed the oil in my YSM-8 using a Tempo Oil Boy. It was infinitely cleaner and easier than the hand pump I used to use.

The Oil Boy in a cylinder about 6 inches in diameter and about 18 inches tall. A pump handle on top pumps the air out. The used oil gets sucked in through a stiff, translucent plastic tube (comes with several sizes) that mates to a plug on top of the cylinder. After the oil is suched out, just wipe off the end of the tube and carry it ashore (holds about 5 quarts). The hole where the tube plugs in is also a pouring spout for dumping the used oil. Very neat and clean. Pretty fast. I no longer dread changing the oil.

The cost was about $50, as I recall; about twice what my old hand pump cost but much less than all those powered oil changers.

Having just purchased and used a little handpump for the first time (this was my first year w/ a boat having an inboard diesel), I can't begin to describe the comedy of errors that occured when I went to use it.

Let's just say that it began with the output hose wiggling clear of my catch bucket, spilling oil all over the cabin sole. It ended with the suction hose slipping free and spilling oil all over my pants.

Result: I'mnow more than ready to ignore the $30 spent on this piece of %@#$ (or maybe use it only for diesel transfers when changing the fuel filter) and buy the Oil Boy. Thanks for the recommendation!
