new sail for the typhoon

It's finally time to break down and buy a new main for the typhoon. Can anybody suggest some good sources and how to avoid any mistakes in measuring, etc? Thanks,Dan

I just bought 3 new sails for my weekender from Quantum Sails....I have the bill in my hand....The main was 1,081 bucks with a 10%discount....Here's the discription from the bill....Computer designed and cut cross cut construction using 5.6 HA {100%}. Handsewn luff and foot hardware, pultruded fiberglass battens, leech cord with cleat, telltales, sail ties, sail bag, battens {1 fuul/RBS}...Don't now what all the means....But there good people to work with...they can be reached at 231-941-1222.....John It's finally time to break down and buy a new main for the typhoon. hey dan!
bought an asymmetrical spinnaker last year and a new working jib this year - 300 and 350. can't help with a mainsail price but all the good lofts have computer readouts for almost all boats. just be sure to get everything in the old sail (leech line, boltropes, slides, etc.) and maybe a few additional items such as at least one set of reef points with tack and clew grommets. do you like full battens?
an alternative is a smaller sailmaker - take the old main with you and the mast and boom measurements and they sure be able to do you right.
i'm sure john peck has a good sail - quantum is a great loft!

Hi Dan,
I recently bought sails for my Ty from clarke bassett at Kappa Sails in Westbrook, CT ..They are terrific and cost just under $1400 for a main with one set of reefing points and a 165% roller genoa (great in light air up here in August)..The genoa can be rolled down to 85% and still keep great shape..I highly recomend you visit his web site
kappasails.com..clarke made sails for at least 3 different typhoons last year..I had bought sails from another sailmaker mentioned in this string and found them wholly unacceptable and returned them..
Good luck, Rodney

Wow! I wish I could afford to buy Quantum Sails for my Typhoon! That's going to be a sharp looking rig.

Dan,

I bought a new main for my Ty last fall. Here's what I learned:

If you can live with your main another season and order the new one in the fall, you'll save 10% or 15%. Most sailmakers offer a fall discount to keep themselves busy through the winter.

Its worth learning a bit about the cloth - there is a big difference between the various woven Dacrons, and you need to know what you are buying. I found the Mack Sails website (http://www.macksails.com) a useful source.

Getting the luff length right for a mainsail is tricky. The "P" measurment is from the halyard shackle pin at maximum hoist to the top of the boom. However, the backstay crane on the Ty does not allow
the headboard to pass through if you hoist the halyard all the way to the top. The result of this is my boom is going to be a couple of inches lower - I'll probably bang my head on the first few tacks! You need to measure carefully and discuss this with your sailmaker. The "P" value of 22ft in the Typhoon specs is too long on my boat.

I decided to go with a fairly roachy main, with a top full batten. I was assured this would not hang up on the backstay too badly... I'll find out in the spring.

For pricing, I got quotes ranging from $459 to $661. The loft I went with was Schurr sails (http://schurrsails.com). I felt they gave a personal service, and were competitive on price. The sail is very nicely finished, with details like leech-line cleats at each reef point, etc.

Regards,
Richard (Typhoon "Blue Diamond")
