Help me get this !*#$@% Yanmar started!!!!

I just finished replacing the fuel strainer assembly on my 1GM because the bleed screw threads were stripped and leaking. I manually pumped until fuel came squirting out the bleed screw on top of the strainer. She started right away and then stopped as if it had run out of fuel. Bled again, though not much air. No start. Repeated bleeding and starting . No joy. What to do next? Is there air trapped between the fuel strainer and the injection pump? Do I need to somehow pressurize that line more than simply bleeding the air from the strainer? HELP!!!

There are two more bleeders to deal with after bleeding the fuel strainer. The next one is located on the high pressure pump on the front of the engine. Then finally there is a bleeder at the fuel injector. I believe there may also be one where the return fuel line leaves the injector. You should bleed these one at a time in order of fuel flow. You can push the fuel to the high pressure pump by using the low pressure pump lever on the side of the engine. You will need to crank the engine in order to get the fuel to the injector and bleed at that point. Once you close the bleeder at the injector, the engine should start right up. You want to be careful not to overtighten these bleeder screws as they are hollow and therefore not very strong. (Don't ask me how I know that.)

My wife used to call the 1GM, in our CD27, "the African Queen." Thump pause pause thump pause pause ............
Of course it was a solid as an anvil and always started, and I liked Bogart.

Our 27, Sláinte, has the YSM8. I love it when we come into the harbor at an idle.
I think of the African Queen every time we do. "Thump pause pause thump pause pause ............" Ahhh, Rosie, it doesn't get any better than this.....

That is really funny. For the past year I've been referring to my Wielewaal as the "African Queen" for that very same reason! What a sound! And we all must be a product of a certain generation, eh?
