Cetol finish
Happy new year all!
I'm looking for input on the new line of Cetol finishes - I re-did the teak on my Typhoon about 7 years ago with Cetol. I used just the regular exterior finish, which was readily available at a local paint shop (Cetol 078 stain, followed by a couple of coats of TGL Gloss). It's held up beautifully but has developed some wear spots from chafing, gotten a few dings, etc. I used the last bit of my 2 quarts to do the front door on my house, which also turned out great.
I see from the Sikkens product listings on their website that they no longer make either finish so am looking for recommendations. Ideally, I'd like to feather the existing finish to the places where it's worn or chipped away, re-stain those bits, build up the top coat to the level of the surrounding finish, and wrap it all up with a final top coat over everything, rahter than stripping everything and starting over.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Cetol finish
Appears that Interlux continues to produce the Cetol product line. I use to product on my Typhoon and hope they continue to make the stuff.
Best regards,

Re: Cetol finish
Sounds like you used the non marine Cetol, which probably has a different tint then the various Marine marketed Cetols. I would be willing to bet though that standard "Cetol Marine" (not Cetol Light and definately not Cetol natural) would be the closest match. The Cetol Gloss is probably no different then when you use previously. You could still use just the hardware store variety Cetol as well rather then the Marine stuff and it might be an even closer match to what you already have.TY375 wrote:Happy new year all!

I have had to call Interlux (same company as Sikkens) about paint matching questions before and found their phone reps to be very helpful in trying to match an out of production paint color using current paints. I wouldnt hesitate to just give them a call and ask them directly, no one will know better then them which current Cetol will match your old Cetol 078. In these days of internet, its easy to assume that companies dont have helpful people you can call anymore, but this is one company that still does.

Re: Cetol finish
If they no longer make the marine grade Cetol I will be disappointed. I used it on my Typhoon Weekender with excellent results and plan to use it on S/V Bali Ha'i.
I used Cetol Marine Natural Teak (CMNT) and Cetol Clear Gloss (CCG). After sanding and prepping, I applied three (3) coats CMNT and two (2) coats CCG. After one year in the South Florida sun (24/7/365) it looked almost as good as when first applied.
I would think West Marine or Jamestown Distributors would still have the marine grade Cetol.
I wish everyone on this board and their families and friends a Safe and Happy New Year

Re: Cetol finish
Plenty of Cetol on the shelves, and it will be there for the forseeable future.
I can't imagine a reason to discontinue it, as there is little competition to such a great product and it has no environmental hazards above oil paints or conventional varnish.

Re: Cetol finish
The Cetol Light and the Cetol Natural are more popular than the Original Cetol, however the Original Cetol is still readily available. If you cannot locate the original (and the finish that many complained was too "orangy") then I think you will have excellent results using either the Light or the Natural, followed by two coats of Gloss. The Natural has the least amount of "orangy" pigmentation. Take your time and enjoy the results!

Re: Cetol finish
Not sure where everyone is getting this idea that they might discontinue any current Cetol. The original poster used an old formulation of Cetol that is no longer available, nothing has been said or suggested by anyone that the current line of Cetol is being discontinued.

Re: Cetol finish
G'day All,
Hope you are all keeping warm and safe. USA cold front has been on our news every night.
After 2 years in our sun (read Florida type) in NSW, I was not able to purchase "Cetol Marine Natural" which was a concern. I had previously stripped back nearly all exterior teak, and finished with 3 or 4 coats. I am very happy with the results, and needed to add the recommended couple of extra coats as the colour was fading slightly, which was the tell tale sign (written on the can).
I just rang their free call Australian help line, and was given the technical reps phone number. The rep said that the "Cetol Marine Natural Teak" is exactly the same. And yes it is, as I have just put on 2 more coats.
Interestingly, the "Natural" was made in the UK, and the "Natural Teak" is made in USA.

Re: Cetol finish
So they are not "exactly" the same, then. Natural Teak from the US should be applied with high powered, gas burning machinery or using bristle brushes made in China that shed a bristle with every stroke, while Natural from the UK should be applied using brushes made with the tail hair from Shetland ponies, while extending ones pinky finger upward. Presumably this applies down under but has to be done while inverted.Noel Heslop wrote:...The rep said that the "Cetol Marine Natural Teak" is exactly the same. Is why you always apply going WITH the grain, so the shed bristles line up well.mashenden wrote:... brushes made in China that shed a bristle with every stroke, ...

Re: Cetol finish
I've found that as I build up subsequent coats the shed bristles are hardly noticeable

The bristles help the finish last longer, too.Jim Walsh wrote:I've found that as I build up subsequent coats the shed bristles are hardly noticeable

If you spell it Bristol it seems better.

Somehow though, I suspect there's a difference between a Bristol finish and a bristle finish.
Is it Spring yet?
