CD36 Water Heater Replacement

Post by Bill Cochrane »

I'm considering replacing the water heater in my '84 CD36. Any ideas on makes/models that will go in without pulling the engine? The hatch is about 11" wide and the one in the quarterberth not quite 13" high. Anyone done this?

Thanks, Bill

Bill:

I have a CD36 #68. While I have yet top replace my water heater, I plan to do so next spring. I have had a number of diferent units in previous boats, and prefer the Atlantic more than others. Atlantic model T6E with a heat exchanger to me is an optimal choice. This should go in through the quarter berth.

I have square, stainless, 6 gallon heater, purchased at West. Previous owner, Robert Chamberlain installed it. It sits on a shelf, fairly low in the port lazarette. The Adler Barbour compressor is mounted on a shelf just above it.

Practical Sailor rated Isotherm the best at heating and keeping water hot for extended periods of time. There are also some very good looking units that provide instant hot wate...certainly enough for washing and perhaps for bathing. A lot smaller and they work off the deisel fuel. You might check into some of these, don't remember the brand names right off the top of my head, but if your interested I'll dig around.
