Good weather hole in the Chesepeake

Post by mike ritenour »

We are heading South this year and intend on spending the summer in the bay.
Looking for a good hidey hole, out of the way marina for LaVida for a month or so in September/October maybe early November. Need a haul-out capability, in case something serious comes up the coast.
Any suggestions are most appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Rit

The bay is a big place, can you be more specific about where you want to be? Northern bay, southern bay? Eastern shore? Airport access?

Deltaville comes to mind first, if you want affordable marinas and boatyards and its certainly out of the way. Generally if you want to stay reasonable on price, just avoid Annapolis, Baltimore, Solomons Island, etc.. basicly anyplace you have heard of before. If you can be more specific about where you want to be I can give specifics as I am sure many others here can as well.

Flag Harbor is one of the safest marinas on the bay. They have all the facilities you require.

I would suggest Ferry Point Marina on thr Magothy River. It is about 4 miles up river from the bay on a beautiful river with great anchorages and tributeries to explore by dinghy. The marina is very well protected and has all the services and repair capabilities as well as a very nice restuarant. I know transient slips are usually available if you wanna tie up for a while. Theres laundry and showers and a great staff to help with anything you might need.

We have not decided which part of the bay we will wind up.
I am thinking somewhere middle to south end of the bay, keeping us closer to the ICW at Norfolk or an easy exit to sea.

Thanks for the comments, we are writing them down!

I second Deltaville if you want to be on the lower end of the bay.

I would also recommend Deltaville as well. We spent 4 days sailing in and areound that area. There are multiple Marinas, reasonable prices and I think 3 or 4 places with lifts.

If swimming is a consideration, the jellyfish are fewer in numbers as you move north up the bay or further up a creek or river. Rock Hall is a nice small town. Services probably cheaper than the Annapolis / Baltimore area and a variety of yards that could haul you out if needed. If you goung to be on the bay all summer you could stay in a variety of areas for a bit and have emough warning to move to a safer location.
Better to find humility before humility finds you.

Yankee Point Marina on the Corrotoman (off the Rappahannock) is a quiet place on a pretty river. Good service, and the town of Kilmarnock is nearby (in bike range).
