OK so here we go, the journey has begun. My Ty is in transition from one name to another. Here she awaits our sea trials underway this week, a holy week in so many ways. She passed several tests: stability, watertight, shroud tension, sail plans, tacking, jibing, reaching, downwind and undersail approach to the dock. Some light wind work tomorrow and some outboard issues, but all in all, remarkable. She's a Classic as all of you already realize!

Thanks Chris. I was able to enjoy 50-60 degree air temps, 53 degree water temps, and pleasant freshening breezes on Tues-Thurs this week for sea trials. Here is a link to the video for a portion of my sea trials with the Typhoon: http://youtu.be/5mJezC57uKA

As you will note from the photos, the taff - rail is in progress so I taped the transom for any water exposure and engineered a temporary solution for the motor mount and back-stay support.

After spending about 10 hours in sea trials over three days, I'd say I'm not keen on the original deck attachments for the mainsheet but they'll do for now. The 3.5 Nissan is "ok" since this vessel is meant to sail, not motor. My taffrail is still in progress--having a craftsman reconstruct the original piece for me. It will probably be the most expensive upgrade on the deck, that is for sure! But I cannot do it myself.

Trying to manage all the progress of my Typhoon I decided to chronicle her journey in a blog format instead of posting pics. The blog is a fun way to convey many ideas about the Cape Dory legend in a way that reflects the sense of story which always accompanies Sailors!

How did you polish your winch stands?

Great observation and question!

I first bathed the winch braces in vinegar over about 5 hours using a large plastic bucket. Along with them, I dumped the bronze bolts and nuts. After about 5 hours the vinegar had stripped away all the patina. I then used my high speed drill with wire brush to further clean and buff, to some degree, the braces. For the bolts I used a wire brush by hand.

Once complete I used the product, Permalac, to provide a protective coating to these pieces. Permalac is available through their online distributors for about thirteen dollars. I've found vinegar to be my best secret weapon of all in dealing with bronze!

Here is a close-up view of the fashionable "motor mount" which is another one of the most obvious bronze pieces on the vessel:



A long, deep, soaking in vinegar takes away the grunge and the wire brush finishes off the polishing. Permelac helps to maintain the natural bronze.

A long soak in vinegar eats away all those hard to get-at places! The wire does the final polish!

I recently heard about the vinegar idea for taking care of patina. I'm thinking about pulling my raw water pump from the engine and giving it a soak.

This is the winch, of course, with the bronze support, after its 5 hour vinegar bath and a bit of wire brushing just for kicks. Sealed with Permalac spray:



Although I lost my camera on a recent motorcycle trip, I'll post an update photo of these when I finalize my purchase of a suitable camera. Perhaps my GoPro may assist me too!

Yeah I know, it's brilliant. I'm watching the patina process degrade it very slowly. I think if it were around salt air and water it would degrade faster. Chris used and recommended Permalac when he was redoing "Get Kraken," that's where I found the product. But the vinegar is cheap and powerful!

I found that ketchup worked pretty well also. I should get around to doing my motor mount. Dremal tools work great for wire brushing in all those little cracks.
