Cape Dory 25 motor recommendation

I have a Cape Dory 25, and I want to replace my 8 hp Mercury two-stroke motor (with remote control) with a four-stroke motor. Given the limitation of the small well, I'm looking for any recommendation for a used or new motor that will fit.

I had a 2 stroke yamaha 6HP but bought a 4 stroke Nissan HP. The 4 stoke was SO much quieter and consumed 1/4 the amount of fuel.

I recently sold the CD25 and I still have the very good condition 6HP Nissan for sale.

I will be traveling to NYC tomorrow and in 2 weeks.

There's a lot of good advice here for the Tohatsu/Nissan 6HP. My CD25 worked very well with that motor. In fact I stilll have the 2003 motor for sale since the new owner opted to buy a new motor.

This motor exhausts through the prop so you can run indefinitely with the engine compartment closed. I have done this for >6hrs with perfect operation. You will need to leave the engine well drop board open to use this motor since the fuel lines use the space blocked by teh drop board.

I have a CD25 and will also recommend the Nissan 6hp 4-stroke. I went with the 20" shaft which is more than long enough. The optional 5 amp charging feature will keep your lights and electronics usuable while underway if your battery runs low, but don't expect it to do the work of an alternator to keep it fully charged.

Also I highly recommend getting a 6" pitch prop which makes a great deal of difference in thrust pushing the heavy hull. I keep the 7 1/2" pitch prop that came standard with the engine on board as a spare.

You will need to lower or cut down the mounting bracket about 1 3/4" to 2" in order get the engine low enough in the well to close the hatch.
