AGM BATTERIES

Post by zeida »

Does anyone has any experience/opinion about the glass matt AGM batteries, other than they are probably the most expensive in the market? Balmar alternators are now recommending them to their customers...!!! Need an opinion ASAP. Thanks

I installed an 800 CCA AGM Optima battery as a dedicated starting battery during a total upgrade of Alosa's charge system 2 years ago. The AGM was segregated from the house bank with an auto-parallel solenoid for charge distribution and an emergency parallel switch for sttarting redundancy using the house bank.
The battery has operated flawlessly, and I have no reason not to recommend it, other than cost, and the caution that charge rate (max voltage) must be carefully controlled to avoid cooking the AGM. This is particularly important if you mix battery types (ie AGM & wet cell or GEL) between house and starter banks.
