Cleaning/Greasing Turnbuckles

Post by jneely »

What is the best thing to use to remove old grease and dirt from turnbuckles and what is the best thing to use to lubricate them?

I clean mine with metal polish and do nothing to lubricate.
I find that anything else just attracts dust and stuff.
Although I hear lanolin helps if they are still stiff.

I use a fine small brass wire brush on the threads.

I clean with WD40 and lube with anhydrous lanolin. A little anhydrous lanolin goes a long way. I got a 1 lb jar at drug store about 15 years ago and I haven't made a dent in it yet. It was a special order item back then. It looks like you can get it on Amazon now for about the same price I paid:

You can also buy Lanocote from West, Defender, Jamestown etc.
