Emergency tiller

Post by Steve Laume »

Raven's emergency tiller was always very hard to stow in an easily accessible place. It generally lived at the bottom of the cockpit locker, piled over with stuff. It always bothered me that it would be difficult to get at in the event of an actual emergency. Not only that but it would rust up every season and require a new coat of paint on an annual basis.

Since I do not own a crested blazer for onshore events, the hanging lock was never very useful. This seemed like a logical place to create an emergency locker. I added a flat bottom, a very tall fiddle on the front and dressed it up with ash ceiling strips. It now contains all my emergency gear. This includes a couple of first aid boxes, flairs, a spare GPS, water bottles, some power bars and my emergency tiller.

The problem in stowing the tiller was the fact that the thing is big. I solved this by cutting off the tiller handle and turning a replacement out of some nice oak. The two piece tiller now easily fits in clips, ready to use in a moments notice.

I still need to put together a proper ditch bag but at least I know where to gather everything in a hurry, Steve.
