I recently toured a Cabo Rico which had teak grating as the cockpit sole. I started considering making a similar grating system for my CD330 and was shocked by the prices for precut teak grating materials. At $19.00 - $20.00 per 1" x 4' strip from most marine "discount" stores the overall cost will be approximately $800. Has anyone located a good source for pre-cut teak grating strips or teak lumber? Has anyone ever found a simple jig system for making accurate joints (using table saw, chop saw, radial arm saw, router table, or hand saw) in teak lumber stock?
Any assistance / comments / suggestions would be appreciated. The classic look which the teak decking adds to the cockpit would be a perfect addition to a CD.

I have a teak cockpit grate, which the former owner's son fabricated. I was shocked to see what the component parts cost!!!
Maybe you can get a lumber yard to order the teak and mill it for you. Might cost a lot less than the marine store alternative. As for do-it-yourself, if you're sort of good at that sort of thing, you can probably do it. Cost, including the tools, will probably be $800 <g>, but you get to keep the tools.

Re: Teak Cockpit Flooring?
Chris,
We also have a teak grating on the cockpit floor of our CD32. It was fabricated by the original owner.
Rather than using the tradition grating (strips crossing each other at 90 degree angles), he used strips of teak about 2" wide x 1/4" thick and probably bought it in 6 or 8' lengths. The teak runs fore and aft between the bridge deck and the pedestal, each plank about 1/4" apart. It is supported by 3 cross sections which run beneath the planks. The cross section at the bridge deck we reshaped so that it would lie flat over the deck fill.
I don't know what it cost him to make, but I think the planking is cheaper than the traditional grating. It's comfortable underfoot and looks nice too.

Re: Teak Cockpit Flooring?
My wife saw and now has to have a teak cabin sole grating too! I am goin to check with a local source who offered to basically make me a kit that I would then assemble. If you are interested I will see if he is willing to do more of these.
