Painting a Ty Keel

Post by Joe M »

I remove the heavy stuff from the boat (mast, anchor, etc) and then alternate rocking the bow and stern using the four screw jack stands on my trailer (lower the bow, raise the stern, then reverse) . I raise the keel about 2 inches at one end enough to get a paint brush under the bottom to paint half-way. Let it dry, lower and switch ends. I figure that the slight hull deflection at the jack stands for a few hours isn't significant.

Unseen in the photo is the rope tying the two straps together on the other side. VERY IMPORTANT! The bow sling can slide off the front if you don't have it! Also the rear strap is in front of the rudder, not on it.

Yes, the yard can pick up the Ty with slings.

I like to use two web slings. I place the forward sling roughly in line with the mast. I place the aft sling about a foot foreward of the rudder post.

I place a light line between both slings on either side to prevent a sling from skating out of position.

The aft sling should be a little longer than the foreward sling.

Never, ever, allow the aft sling to bear on the rudder, always keep it under the keel.

Try to use slings long enough that the angle formed on the sling from side to side is no flatter than a 45°. If this isn't possible, make sure that a spreader is positioned on top of the coaming boards that is no shorter than the rub rails. Too short a sling can produce tremendous squeezing side pressure on the hull.

Good luck,

PAINTING UNDER KEEL TYPHOON

Post by Ned Crockett »

I use a different approach. I use my Jeep jack, a cinder block, and a piece of 2x4x12" to first jack up the rear ( I have about 12" keel overhang - the 2x4 against the keel bottom), then the bow, just enough to apply paint. A piece of low pile carpet works well -- apply paint to carpet and slide under keel. When jacking up the bow, be careful that the 2x4 against the slanted portion of the hull is centered. Have done this for a number of years without a problem. Good luck!
