I just moved up from a C D 27 to a C D 30 Cutter hull # 141 ,any tips on sail trim under different wind conditions would be great. Also if there are any common problems i should look out for .She has a Volvo Md7a with a two blade prop. I just sailed her back from Long Island Sound to southern N.J. this past weekend with a 20 Knot South wind,a little slow going. Would a three blade prop help?
Thank You,

C.D. 30 Cutter sail trim

Re: C.D. 30 Cutter sail trim
I have a CD30 #283 (1983), and have sailed her for 9 years with about 9000 miles on her. I'd like to help you figure out your sail trim, but your message was short on details. You state that you sailed her back from Long Island Sound, but then ask if motoring would be better with a three bladed prop. Normally, we consider sailing to be just that...what you were apparently doing is actually motor sailing.
If motoring into a chop or wind, a three bladed prop would help to some extent. The larger increase in performance will be apparent when backing down...but the "P" effect, which tends to pull the boat to starboard when in reverse would also increase in it's effect while backing down.
What is your experience with keel boats? What tack were you on? What kind of sails were up, what were the sea and wind conditions? Give us some details and we will try to help you out.
Cheers!

Re: C.D. 30 Cutter sail trim
Jerry: when I first owned my CD 30 and was berthed at Coyote Pt in South Bay, I hit heavy chop and stronger than usual winds that season. I changed from a two blade to three blade prop, and it made quite a difference when I had to use the motor heading into the chop.I just moved up from a C D 27 to a C D 30 Cutter hull # 141 ,any tips on sail trim under different wind conditions would be great.
