CD Board Code of Conduct. & General Rules...PLEASE READ!

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

Code of Conduct & Rules
  • The Cape Dory Board is well known for it's friendliness and willingness to help. In order to keep that reputation, and to be able to act on those instances where the reputation may be damaged, we have made a set of simple rules every registered user needs to abide by. This etiquette applies to all members at any time. Keep these rules in mind when sending "pm" and "email" messages to board users as well.

Keep in mind that the Web Team are regular members just like you and volunteer their support in their spare time out of their own free will. Please respect that and be patient if you don't receive an answer right away. Members of the Web Team can be contacted by sending an email to webmaster@capedory.org.

Registration on this web site, and/or the use of this web site, constitutes an agreement to these Terms.
You must register with, and maintain, a valid email address. No exceptions.
  • A member is allowed only one account. Double accounts will be deleted without warning.
General rules
  • This is an international website. Try to remember, that what is considered to be OK in one culture and in one language might not be OK in another culture or another language. This site has participants of all ages. Try to remember, that what might be appropriate between people of the same age or gender might not be appropriate between people of different age groups or opposite gender.
Spamming and Trolling
  • We do not tolerate spamming or trolling anywhere.
What posts are permitted and prohibited?
  • Anything having to do with Cape Dory power and sail boats is fair game, except for certain commercial posts - see the next question.

We are a community of boaters, so occasional general boating questions, as well as occasional personal messages that help build the sense of community, are OK. However, three topics are always off-limits: Sex, religion and politics. Any mention of these inevitably draws fuel, heat and (hot) air - the ingredients for a fire if not an explosion.

Please remember that our server space is limited, and we do keep most of the messages in the archive. The rec.boats newsgroups are another good place for general questions.

Any spam messages which deliberately try to exploit the message board - such as non-boating ads, chain letters, etc. - are prohibited, and will be dealt with severely. That means not only removal, but a complaint to the Internet Service Provider of the spammer.
Are For-Sale and commercial posts allowed?
  • For-sale and want-to-buy Cape Dory posts are welcome. Please include your phone number and the boat's general location. Please do not make multiple posts until your original post has fallen off the bottom of the page.

To reply to a for-sale post, use email. Do not post a reply that just asks the seller to call or email you or provide more information.

Commercial advertising is not allowed, with two exceptions: Brief Cape Dory for sale posts by dealers are permitted. (See above for guidelines.); and, brief one-time factual announcements by suppliers of original equipment items for Cape Dory boats. Also posts regarding the sale of replacement parts for original items such as fiberglass parts and metal castings are allowed since they are direct replacements, but posts regarding things like sails or canvas, which are normally custom made, are not allowed.

For-sale and want-to-buy posts may be deleted by the webmaster anytime after three weeks from posting.
General Posting Guidelines
  • Please post your topic to one forum only. If it needs to be moved, alert the Web Team by email. Use meaningful subject titles in the forum and messages which give information about your posting or PM.
Topics
  • Please stay on topic. Ensure you post your topic in the correct forum.
Language
  • Do not use offensive language. We are here for people of all ages, and want everyone to feel comfortable. Offensive language such as profanity, racial, ethnic, and gender based insults or any other personal discriminations, and posts meant to offend or hurt any other member or their work will not be tolerated. If you'd like to or need to say something do it in a respectful manner. If you disagree with the content of a posting, simply state that you disagree and state why with supporting facts, not with insults. Flaming will not be tolerated.
Avatars
  • Please use proper judgment when choosing an avatar. We like to promote a family atmosphere, and avatars that disrupt this will be removed. Do not spoof or post misleading text in your avatar. There are several generic Avatars you can download for your use in case you don't have your own personal Avatar.
Signatures
  • Please keep your signatures simple as they can detract from the forum section. A line or two of text should be enough for anyone's signature. Please refrain from the use of bold text, images, banners, or graphics in signatures. Also no links are allowed.
Links
  • Warez and other illegal transactions may NOT be linked to in any shape or form. Pornography is not permitted, and adult content oriented links will be removed without hesitation or notification.
Images
  • Please use the [img] function for online image linking to your own web site or outside photo hosting services like Photo Bucket or Image Shack sparingly in all forums (except the "Cape Dory Eye Candy" and "Cape Dory Projects & Project Photos" forums where image linking is encouraged). One or two photos in a forum thread is usually all that is necessary to get your point across.
Cooperation
  • There isn't such a thing as a stupid question. All questions have to be treated equally. Do not speak down to people. We all started as newbies at some point - always keep that fact in mind when responding to a question.

It's only when we work together, that the Cape Dory Board grows and gets better. It's only when we cooperate, that we move forward. In this cooperation every little bit of help is appreciated. Remember this when you are asking questions - and remember it, when you are answering.
Be constructive
  • Think of how you can contribute to someone's project rather than what you can get from it. We will go nowhere, if the members here are all too busy maintaining their own ideas and not sharing with others. If you just criticize without being constructive, you stop the community from growing and negative criticism does nothing to help the person who asked the question or to resolve the problem.
Credits
  • Remember to give credit where it is due. This goes not only for copyright issues but also for constructive solutions and constructive error handling. It's important to give this positive feedback. This makes life easier and more enjoyable for all parties.
If you fail to follow these guidelines you will either receive a message, a warning, a temporary or permanent ban from a member of the Web Team, depending on the severity of the issue. Disrespectful behaviors, offensive sentences, insults and other language abuses, as described above, will be deleted without warning.
Banning
  • If you fail to follow these guidelines you will either receive a message, a warning, or a temporary or final ban depending on the severity of the issue from a moderator or a member of the Web Team. Disrespectful behaviors, offensive sentences, insults and other language abuses, as described above, will be edited or deleted without warning.

Once banned from this site for any misconduct listed above, you will no longer be allowed to view or to participate on this site.
