Unusual CD30 in Marina del Rey

Post by Bruce Dart »

Just got back from looking over a '76 CD30 Cutter being offered for sale in Marina del Rey, California (see listing on Boats.com) that has a couple of features I've never seen on a CD30 before. First, the salon is set up with a dinette to starboard instead of two settees. The joinery work is first class, with the wood a perfect match for the teak in the rest of the wood. There is also a large amount of additional joinery in the salon, all done to the same standard, and apparently of about the same age. It looks factory.

The boat also has an unusual tiller setup. The tiller strap and cap look like stock Cape Dory, and seem to connect to the rudder stock in the conventional way (with a key-way.) Instead of terminating just above the cockpit sole, however, the rudder stock is much longer, about what it would need to be to connect with the older style worm gear that the early CD30's came standard with. My first thought was that this was a DYI conversion, but neither the surface of the seat nor the cockpit sole show any evidence of there ever having been a teak box fixed in place. Plus the rounded fiberglass housing covering the rudder stock (visible in the photos) is very professionally done, not DYI at all.

So, could either the interior or the tiller been done by the factory?

FYI: They're asking $19,000 for the boat. The sails and engine is question marks. And, the sea-cock I looked at was so badly corroded that it looked like it would blow away in a strong breeze. Might make someone the perfect project boat, though, at least at the right price.
