CD 25 Boom Vang
Sailed my boat for the first time a few days ago. It was immediately apparent that she could use a boom vang. The boom gets pretty bouncy going downwind. I've been searching the internet but many vendors don't give much info. I would like to buy a suitable kit with all the mounting hardware included. I saw a Garhauer that look OK but few specs were provided. I would greatly appreciate any advice on what and where to buy. Thanks.

vang
Joel,
If you look further on the website, follow the link at the top of the page that says "About Cape Dory Yachts", then "Specifications of Cape Dory boats", then "Cape Dory 25", then "CD 25 owner's manuals", at the top of the page will be a link to "Boom Vang specs and installation". It will tell you the size and location of the boom bails that you will need.
Don't know if you will find a "kit" out there with all the hardware you need, but all the info you need is there.
I just replaced my vang with a rigid vang from Gauhauer, so if you want to send me an email or PM, I've got a Schaefer vang that is sitting in my garage that I would part with for a nominal price. Don't have the boom bails, but it would include the line.
Hope the info helps.
Good Luck,

skip the kits
For mine, I bought individual blocks, line and boom bail from Defender. It was much cheaper than the kits I found, partly because you can use smaller line than what the kits use. You do need to make one eye splice. I did add the "mast organizer" as part of this.
I don't have all the part numbers handy but can put that together if you go that way. Let me know.

Re: skip the kits
I'd pay attention to the working loads, as a vang's mechanical advantage can be used for easy lifting when someone goes aloft or for COB recovery.jbenagh wrote:... partly because you can use smaller line than what the kits use.

my parts list
Good point Neil. I used 880lb working load parts. Here's my parts list:
mast bail: 90-09, 3/8 x 3 1/2 bolt
boom bail: Schaefer 90-10, 3/8 x 3 bolt
mast bail holes 2in above deck
boom bail holes 3ft 7in from gooseneck
Ronstan RF41510 Series 40 fiddle block
Ronstan RF41500 Series 40 fiddle block
40ft 5/16 Samson LS
I used the mast step organizer instead of the mast bail but kept the boom distance the same (there was already a hole there -- go figure).

Re: my parts list
I didn't see any hardware on your list for securing the line. (One of the fiddle blocks on my boom vang has a cam cleat.)jbenagh wrote:Ronstan RF41500 Series 40 fiddle block

Thanks all
Thank you for the detailed input. It's great when folks are so helpful.
cam cleat
good call Neil. I used a cam cleat on the hatch hood. I believe it was a Ronstan RF5410. The cam cleat is backed up with fender washers. I removed the hatch hood and reattached using 3M5200 and screws to help ensure it is secure. I figure the loads on the vang tailing end are fairly light since it is the same as what I haul on (probably in the 60-80lb range).I didn't see any hardware on your list for securing the line.
