CD-27 Owner Needs help with standing rigging

Post by VegaIII »

Hi:

I'm in desperate need of some information from another CD-27 owner. Vega III (Hull#109 c. 1978) was transported from Salem, Ma to Lake Champlain last Fall (her new home). Somehow, in the process of haul-out, transport, etc. the spreaders were misplaced.

While the folks at RigRite (Spartan) can fabricate a new set of spreaders, they don't have the specifications for the spreader length for a 1978 CD-27. While I realize that every rig will be slightly different, I was hoping a CD-27 owner out there might be able to provide me with a measurement from the mast to the tip of the spreader. I cannot seem to find that dimension anywhere either in the manual or on the web. It would at least provide me with a starting point for having new spreaders fabricated.

I would be grateful for any help you might be able to give. Many thanks in advance.

spreader length

Post by craig »

our boat is a 1980 hull #182. overall length of the spreaders from the mast is 38 5/8 inches. from the mast to the inside of the upper shroud is 37 7/8 inches. depending on what type of tip is installed this might be the more important number. ours has a slot for the upper to pass through and a small hole to run seizing wire . hope this helps. somewhere on this website i have run across a complete list of dimensions for spars etc. our boat is parked next the driveway so if you need more info - no problem. we are down to a few small piles of snow but sailing is about a month away for us. good luck with your cape dory. craig

Craig--thank you so much. This is just the information that I need. It conforms with what was given on the Spartan website as 38" mast to wire. At least I now know that the replacement spreader is in the ballpark of being the correct length.

I do have virtually all of the other critical measurements from the published specifications but the spreaders seem to have been left out of the drawings.

If I can ever help you out with anything please let me know. I've owned Vega III since 1993 and cruised her pretty extensively along the New England coast over the past 17 years. She's one of the few CD-27's I've seen with wheel steering. I re-powered her in 1998 with a Yanmar 2GM and added a 3 bladed prop. I found that with the 1GM it was often difficult to keep her headed into a heavy sea. There hasn't been a single day (well--maybe one or two) that I've regretted owning her. I'm now looking forward to cruising her in fresh water.

Again, many thanks for your help.
