Cape Dory 28 Wheel-to-tiller

Post by cdfever22 »

I was looking into a 28 with a edson wheel and was wondering if it was at all possible to convert it to a tiller steering? Is that more work that it is worth?

Was it converted to a wheel before? If the rudderpost is sticking through the deck, yank and fill the holes, and put a tiller back on.

Otherwise it's a new rudderpost and much work.

If the sterntube was cut, you may have expenses reversing that too.

I no longer regret buying one of the few CD 30s with a tiller.

Keep the wheel and all the related hardware in a cockpit locker, so that your emergency wheel can be nearly instantly installed in the case of all-too-common tiller failure.

28 wheel to tiller

Post by SPIBob »

The issue of going form wheel to tiller has come up before. Do a search for a more detailed discussion of converting. My 28 had wheel steering when I bought her in '99. After about five years I converted to tiller. Long story short, I prefer the tiller. Overall, I think it sails better with the tiller. The wheel does have some advantages.
