trucking companies

Post by john churchill »

i am in the process of buying a boat in conneticut and considering the options for bringing her home to norfolk, va. due to time constraints (working for a living really interferes with sailing plans) and lateness of the season, i am leaning towards having her trucked here. does anyone have experience with different companies- good and bad? the limited number of quotes i have received range from less than $1000 to $2400. unfortunately i suspect that the charges more reflect the need for the job than the quality of work. on the other hand, saving a few small bucks on the transport and having the boat trashed is a foolish economy. any advice? thanks in advance.

John,

Give Joule Yacht Transport a call for a quote. I monitor the Island Packet List on SailNet. Digesters there have indicated great satisfaction with their care of your boat while in transit. Joule is on the net at http://www.jouleyacht.com/ From what I understand, they are the only transport company used by Island Packet Yachts.

I recently trucked my CD25 from Chicago to Florida with considerable heartbreak, lessons learned and dollars still flying out of my pocket. Key lessons learned with ANY trucking company and the contract:
1. Determine in writing and the full extent of whom is responsible and doing what with respect to Boat Prep, tie-down and liability. i.e., if XXX ties-down, duct-tapes and secures the seahood and companionway hatch and blows off truck at 65MPH -- who pays? What if something like the lazarette hatch cover flys open and bonks a car behind; your liability or theirs? Determine if insurance rider is required from your normal coverage. Do you or they remove mast and secure it to the flatbed truck including wrapping ... otherwise, if lines/halyards come undone and drag down highway, you're sunk. WHO does what and to what extent is very important to establish so there are no surprises (I experienced all of the above surprises).
2. Make sure arrangements at other end are secured; will yard accept your boat, who makes arrangements for temporary storage, travelift and labor to move boat off of truck and into their temp storage. Will you be charged directly or via the trucking company. Mine sat for 48 hours at their gate awaiting unloading on a weekend for unloading at unbelievable rates.

John,

This webpage lists the websites for a bunch of boat yacht transporters. It may be of some help.

I don't know anything about the transporters so you'll have to do the research.
