Standing Head Room?

Post by randy robar »

Hi Everyone,

What is the standing head room for the Cape Dorys? I cannot find them listed anywhere. My wife and I are thinking of getting a boat and a Cape Dory is one that we're considering. I'm 6' 3" so height is one of our decision points.

Thanks in advance,
randy & lisa

You won't make it without bending a little in a CD-30. I'm 6' 0", and I can just barely stand straight in "Stork" in the main cabin.

Randy - While is was in the market for a CD330 I found one where the cabin sole had been customized at the factory. The center of the sole had been made with a step down center section which provided an additional 4" of headroom. I do not know if this was a common factory modification, however, I would assume it is possible to modify an existing floor

The standing headroom in the 25D, I believe, is given as 5 ft 11 in.

I'm 6ft 3 1/2 ( or so) and I find the important thing is whether I can straighten my back in the cabin - even if I have to duck.
I can do that in the 25D.

Even if headroom appears adequate, be sure to actually lie down in the berths - they may not be long enough.

Other cruising-type boats you might want to look at are Nonesuch's
and the Atlantic-City Catboat, which was made to accomodate the
designer's 6'4" frame.

Of course, if you can afford it, get a bigger boat! :-)

I'm 6'0" and have lots of extra head room on my CD33. I'd guess a 6'3" person could stand straight up in my boat.

I am 6'4" and I fit

I have a CD31, just an inch too short on headroom. I have to be in the companionway to get fully vertical.
But I have been on Ryan's 33, lot's of room. The 36 is fine too. Havn't been on a 32 (they are rare), but our asst. webmaster catherine m. owns one, ask her......

Hi,
You won't find standing headroom in a CD-25 unless your are five foot nothing! The CD-25D is a different boat with much more room.
John :)
