Has anyone rebuilt the md2b volvo? I think mine may have spun a bearing or broke a ring, it's not frozen but makes a real metal to metal sound and lit up the oil light when this started.
Any info on cd 28 rebuilding/repowering would be great, engine is the original 75' Thanks, Tom Young

Rebuilding volvo MD2B?

Re: Rebuilding volvo MD2B?
I had a md2b in my cd 28-9 years ago I replaced with an md11c-same configuration-same gearbox-it still runs great but these things prove absolutely impossible to find parts for-I assume yours is 20-25 years old-and parts are very very expensive-I am at the point now where if it even looks at me funny I am going to rip it out and replace it with an american made motor-westerbeke or perkins so I will not have the same problem. I am currently hung up with my starter which I am awaiting word on-either they can rebuild it or not-then its $840 and about 2 weeks to get one-Di Pietro in Rocky hill ct treated me very well but I heard they went out of business and now are back in business in East Hartford Ct-but I have no idea if they still rebuild volvos-if it was me I definetly would not bother due to the difficulty and expense in getting parts-they are great engines but if you can't get the parts for them what good are they? My motor maybe for sale shortly if I replace it because I have gearbox problems and they are also impossible to find-volvo of course made their own gearboxes and nothing else fits-justs my thought on the matter-good luck-Has anyone rebuilt the md2b volvo? American made marine diesel...NOT
I am under the impression there are no small marine diesels available anymore...only modified (for marine use) tractor and industrial diesels are currently available...and they mostly come from Japan

Re: Rebuilding volvo MD2B?
There is a company out of L.A. called Bay Marine who rebuilds Volvos. For around a couple of grand, he will trade out yours for a rebuilt. He does a nice job as I have recomended them to others who have had the same positive results as I have. The MD2B is a great engine - a bit heavy, but will run forever if you take care of it. It is also the only 2 cycl diesel I have ever been able to hand start.Has anyone rebuilt the md2b volvo? Re: Rebuilding volvo MD2B?
Be careful about Westerbeke. You don't know what you are getting. They do not manufacture engines..they just slap a bunch of parts on them and spray paint them for sale. It could be a Bukh, or whatever. Yanmar does make a good replacement for both the MD2B and 7B, and there is an engineering company down in North Carolina that will make a personality block for a Yanmar that will allow you to use your V-Drive should you have one. Prices quoted (1997)to me for replacing my MD7B were $6k plus shipping, installation and misc. So figure $8k nowdays.
I decided to rebuild the MD7B, and it was a good move. Cost was $2500 inc. installation and all parts and labor. Relaize that the injector pump on a MD7B (new) cost $4800. SO these are expensive gadgets that we are playing with.
Cheers!
