long shaft on CD25

I'm currently using a Nissan 8 hp with a very long shaft (about 25 inches) in the well on our CD25, but it's old and needs to be replaced. Does anyone use a 20 inch long shaft, and is that long enough? Also, does anyone have experience with the Nissan 5 HP 4-stroke engine?

I use a Mariner 8 long shaft on my CD25 and it works great. About two months ago, on this board, I read of someone using a short shaft by mounting it on a 2x4 placed at the lowest spot possible.

We use a Yahama 6hp 2-stroke w/20" shaft. It works fine. No problems at all.

Hi Steve,

I use a Johnson 8 with a 15" shaft. It works fine when mounted on a pressure treated 2x4 to lower the motor. I like the very short shaft because I can handle it easily and store it in the cockpit lockers. I don't think you would be able to store any four cycle motor in the lockers; they must be kept upright at all times.

I recently replaced a 7.5 Evenrude 20" shaft with a new 5hp 4-stroke Honda 20" shaft. I researched various options and decided on the 5hp Honda (also got a good discount from the dealer)due to its efficiency, low polluting factor and lightweightness (portability). I keep it stored in the cabin after each use-horizontally. 4-stroke Hondas can be stored vertically AND horizontally, if stored horizontally, you must place it on the side opposite the tiller arm and like all outboards, keep the motor head elevated above the shaft so water will not enter the engine. This is explained in the owner's manual and I can attest to it from my experience thus far. The motor runs fine after I store it horizontally in the cabin on the floor. I don't know about the Nissan but the Honda 4-stroke works fine, adequate power, no smoke and it fits. ( I had only to move my mounting bracket forward about half an inch- each CD25 seems to be a little different in dimensions in this area.)My second choice was going to be an 8hp 2-stroke Nissan but I got such a good price I went with the usually more pricey Honda. I would thing that the 4-stroke Nissan would be fine, but.... check the dimensions closely- 4-strokes tend to be larger in the motor head. I would definitely recommend the 20" shaft for rough weather situations Good luck, Bill

I use a Yamaha 8hp 20" shaft. It works fine. I replaced an Evinrude 9.9hp 20" shaft. No modifications were necessary to fit the Yamaha in the well.
