to buy or not to buy, 1964 CD25

Post by Dave Wathne »

I Found a CD 25, 1964, owner is asking $6,500.00. My wife and I have loved the looks of Cape Dory's for 25 years. We live in West Michigan, 2 miles to Lake MI. We are looking for our first Cape Dory / sailboat. Are we crazy thinking and or considering such an old craft? What problems should we expect? Any input welcomed... thanks..

You might want to check the year (1964?). I believe the CD25 was first produced in 1973. Go to the history of the CD25 on this web site for more information.

Is that a typo? They didn't make them then. Maybe a '74?

In any case, age shouldn't be a problem. The hull might last forever. A well maintained CD isn't old after 25 years or so.

Get the boat surveryed professionally.

Check the Vessel Identification Plate (or impression) on starboard side of transom/stern. This will show year and month produced, hull #, etc. Our CD25 TEMA is a 1974 and is hull #76; so entry of 1964 assume to be typo.

Price listed is in middle of typical for good shape, well inventoried CD in that age. Survey is important tho. Ours was on Lake Michigan for some 20+ years. We now sail her on Gulf out of Cape Coral, FL.
