Iamb trying to determine whether to give up on the Groco head presently aboard my '82 CD28. I've rebuilt the pump--pumps fine but still has leaking issues. W-Marine has a Jabsco compact head on sale and the price is far better than most. I hope it's not a "get what you pay for" type investment yet Practical Sailor did a review (on going) in the Jan. '08 issue and graded it pretty well.
I also wonder if the install will be a headache?
Any comments/advise greatly appreciated.......have to get ready for the Beaver Is. randevouz next month.
Many Thanks,
Guy

Is it the HF?
We just rebuilt ours and, like yours, pumps great. We used the original pump about ten years with little maintenance so it was due for the rebuild. We have never had leaking problems though. Where is yours leaking from?
Groco HF
I recently discovered that the Groco folks in Maryland will service/repair the HF heads for the cost of parts only, NO LABOR CHARGES. Might be worth sending the pump to them and get the leaks fixed (assuming it's the pump that's leaking). I'm sure the repairs would be cheaper than a new head, and of course there is the 'boat factor' of doing projects that change things on boats. Hoses, attachments, all that stuff.
Just a thought.

Groco HC head failure.
My CD30 had a Groco HC head which started leaking around the base of the bowl. The HC has a PVC type base and the lower flange had cracked and distorted to the extent that the rubber seal was no longer effective. In fact there were a number of cracks in various places around the base and pump flange. I bought the Groco HF model that has a bronze base now, as the old unit was not really repairable. Groco moved the floor mounting points on the bronze casting, or at least they moved one pair, so its not a straight swap. It just seemed that a good solid bronze base would probably outlast a PVC one in the long run, but given that the mounting holes are a little different anyway, changing to some other, possibly cheaper or better alternative may not be so disadvantageous.
