Teak cleaner

Post by marv brinn »

Some time ago I used a two part teak cleaner to prep my boat for cetol...the cetol has weathered off and now I am thinking of doing it again
I need to know if the fiberglass needs to be specially protected when using the two part cleaner...a is an acid an b is a neutralizer...will it damage the gel coat??etc.

Try Soy-Gel

Its environmentally safe...doesnt burn your hands and will not damage gelcoat....I use it to strip all of my 22 teak....only precaution...cover your trailer parts if you have one...it'll eat paint ...also use siran wrap to cover for 6-8 hours so it doesnt dry out...I endorse this product..craig

To just clean and brighten..

Any of the retail teak cleaners and teak brighteners ( starbrite/West Marine..) have always worked well on my weathered teak through several CD's and I do not ever recall there being an issue with the fiberglass .. a very light hand rub of 120 grit before the cleaner/brightener seemed to help get rid of any small remaining spots of old cetol.. I had to remove lots of old varnish from my CD 10 recently and used soy strip with excellent results and no damage to the fiberglass.
FYI - I recently had redone the teak on a (ugh) Catalina 27 with Cetol Natural Teak and was very impressed with the results after 3 coats it has, so far, held up better than the Teakguard I had been using.

Fair Winds and good luck,

John

If it's something like Te-Ka, you're supposed to rinse the area well. We just keep lots of water going to minimize and dilute any contact with the gelcoat.
