Rear mast carrier ideas

Post by GATYW »

I trail my Typhoon a good bit and I'm seeking ways to improve on my rear mast carrier. Don' t like my current method.

Any ideas from those of you that trail often? I don't want to drill any unecessary holes in the boat.

I went with a milk crate with a small fender on top. Everything lashed down well and never a problem.

Not very elegant but effective, Steve.

How's this: A pair of 1x2s sandwiched together with a single bolt about 6 to 8 inches from the end. When scissored apart, the bottom legs would fit on the cockpit seats and the top of the "X" could hold the mast. Add a couple of bungee cords and you should be good to go. Once launched, the boards could be "closed" and stowed in a cockpit locker.

Two pieces of 2x4 - cut a notch half way through each and just slip them together. I padded the bottom of them and just sit them on the seat.

Securing Mast when trailing

Post by ckelly »

I raised the trailer mast support (I'm guessing approx. 12" to 16") enough so the mast, when it rests on the rear deck and the trailer support, clears the cabin top. I bolted a 2x4 to the trailer support and cut a V in the top of the 2x4 to hold the mast. I place my throwable life preserver under the mast on the rear deck and then tie the mast to the boat and the trailer. The system has worked for 10 trips of about 50 miles each. Barn to lake and lake to barn. It is a simple system because no extra parts are needed. they are on the boat all the time. If interested I can give you some more details and dimensions.

two 1 x 4 's screwed together in an x with a bottom 1 x 4 connecting the two "feet" ends. fits neatly between the tiller base trim and the back of the cockpit. a small length of rope wrapped around the waist of the x and attached to two stern cleats keeps it very secure and will not topple over.

Thanks for the ideas

I'm also using the milk crate method. Just doesn't seem to stack up to the "stylelishness" of the Tyhoon.
