"New" diesel engine

Post by PollyCD30 »

Hi everyone,

I'm getting ready to repower my CD 30. I was leaning towards an 18 hp Volvo, but recently found a "new" 18 hp Yanmar diesel for sale (Yanmar 2GM 20 F) at a considerable savings. The engine was purchased new in 2006, but was never installed. It looks great, just a little rust on the plate that bolts to the prop shaft. The engine oil is full and clean and the transmission fluid is full and clean.

Any thoughts on the Yanmar? Any thoughts on an engine that's been sitting for 3 years?

Thanks, Dave

Dave, congrats!! on the find.
I would check the impeller out. Chances are it has been in the same position since its installation at the factory.
Any engines I have in stock as display, I rotate the engine to move the impeller into new position on a regular basis.

At the very least pull it and check the blades, one or two may not flex back out or they may be fine.
I would also go ahead and change all the oils.
I would also check to see if the warranty is still valid.
Keep us posted
Best regards, Ben

Yanmar engine

Go for it, Dave! My CD28 has the 2GM20F engine that was installed new in 1985 and it continues works very well. These engines last for many years provided they are well maintained.
