recently bought a CD25 and am wondering where the hull # is?
Also, what is the difference between a CD25 and a CD25D?

No one else yet having responded, I will take a stab at answering with the confidence that others far more knowledgeable than I will correct my misstatements.
First, congratulations on owning a Cape Dory sailboat
She will be the pride of the fleet at your sailing club.
Generally (there may be differences depending on the model) hull numbers are stamped on a piece of thin sheet metal with the metal affixed to the starboard side of the transom high up near the rub rail. Over the years, this number may be almost unreadable depending on hull repairs, painting, etc. You should have the hull number on the certificate of title also and can compare it with the hull number on the transom, if legible.
There are many differences between a CD 25D and a CD 25 including:
1. Different naval architects. Carl Alberg designed the CD 25D; George Stadel (sp?) designed the CD 25.
2. The CD 25D has diesel auxiliary power. The CD 25 has a stern well for a small outboard motor.
3. The specs are also slightly different.
4. The cabin configuration is very different. The CD 25D has a standard marine head in what would usually be the forward vberth area. The CD 25 has a marine head (or porta potty - depending on what was requested at time of mfg.) on the port side aft of the standard vberth (I think).
5. There were many more CD 25s built than CD 25Ds.
From what I have observed over the past few years people who own (or owned) a CD 25 love them. People who own (or owned) a CD 25D love them.
I own a Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender ("the prettiest girl in the fleet"
) and love her.

Congrats on your "new" cd25.
Since you own a cd 25 I'll give you some feel for a cd25d - as best I can as Sea Hunt has covered much.

....cd25d displacement ~5200lbs draft 4'
....cd25......................~4000.............3'
different hull - the cd25d is more like a cd26/cd27 - cruisers
.....than a cd22/typhoon/typhoon sr - more likely day sailors
.....cd25d has standing headroom, standard inboard diesel
.....whereas no standing headroom and only cd22d will have inboard diesel
HIN's are usually embossed into the transom - facing the transom from outside the cd25 the HIN would be high on the starboard side of the transom - of course it could have been "covered" by a PO during restoration ??? There's also - usually - a bronze ( or plastic ) plate just inside the companionway with the model's production serial number ( ie 760 for a 1980 cd25 would mean its full HIN would be CPDE0760M80J.
Just a couple items to start - I'm sure others will add to whats been posted so far

I don't know if you are aware of it or not, but there is an awful lot of info and data on all of the CD boat models. At the top of the home page, click on "CDSOA" or "Cape Dory Info".
Next, in the blue column at the left, click on "Cape Dory Info". Slide to the right and down and click on "Cape Dory Specs".
Then click on CD 25 or CD 25D. You'll find lots of good stuff there.
A suggestion: You should consider joining CDSOA. It's the members dues that keeps this forum afloat.

Is this deceptive and misleading information that you are providing that should be brought to the immediate attention of the rules and disciplinary committees for corrective and remedial action
I was under the impression, probably erroneous, that ALL Cape Dory sailboats were assigned hull numbers, regardless of when manufactured. The hull numbering system may have changed but Cape Dory hulls all have numbers.
I guess I'm wrong again.

I believe mark meant to say hull number 289 does not have a HID number and that makes everybody right.Markst95 wrote:Hull #'s weren't required until 73. My 72 Typhoon doesn't have one.
I have a CD-10, hull number 63, that was definitely built before 1973 with no HID number.

I'm sure I deserve punishment, I've been a bad boy spending all this time and money on restoring my boat. I have a Builders plate with a hull # of 289 on it. I assumed the #'s you guys were talking about were HIN#'s (thanks Steve). They were required on boats in 73. When I registered my boat they wouldn't take the Cape Dory # even though I didn't have a HIN.
