Cape Dory 19' Typhoon Weekender

Post by Shane Webb »

I am wanting to get some information on a Typhoon I found in Missouri. We are sailing novices and desire a stable boat for learning and weekend trips. The boat I am looking at seems to be in very good condition, built in 1978, has good trailer, and a British Seagull motor (ok condition). Asking price is $4500 - but may be able to negotiate - is this a reasonable asking price? This boat has been sold the past 2 summers because the owners wanted bigger sailboats, but thought the Typhoon to be a great little boat - emphasis on little. Can you give me any pointers on how much the 19' is worth ?

Hi Shane,

I looked at a CD-19 Weekender on Long Island this weekend,(hull no. 320) advertised as a 1989 model. The hull number and the vintage didn't jive, and I suspect she's a 1973-4 model. She had the original flat cockpit hatches and was in poor condition ( back deck rotted out, mast step sagging into cabin top, numerous cracks and holes in deck and hull.) The boat also had a masthead rig. I thought that these boats came only with a fractional rig. The boat did have running lights, VHF, interior lights, porta-potty and a 10 year old Evinrude outboard with an alternator.

They were asking about $5900 for this boat, which was WAY over valued. Based on my perusal of this website and it's postings, I reckon a CD-19 in very good, sail-away condition, with motor and trailer should be about $4000 - $5000 in value, especially for one less than ten years of age.

Check out this web page up top and do a search for topics, entering "Typhoon Weekender", and you'll get a good listing of CD-19 coorespondence. Good luck!
