I want to thank those who replied to my last posting. You convinced me of what I probably already knew - that I should opt for a mooring over a slip without enough water under it at low tide..
So now the question is : how heavy a mooring anchor should I get?
I am thinking that the bigger the better, but I don't want to get silly about it. It is going to be in Hempstead Harbor on the North Shore of Long Island.

Mooring In Hempstead Harbour
Hi Marty,
Hempstead Harbour is an excellent choice for a place to keep your boat. I imagine that you will enjoy sailing from there much more than your earlier choice.
If I were you, the first thing that I would do before making plans is to get in touch with the local Harbour Master and let him direct you in your next steps.

There are several marinas in the Glen Cove area. They provide slips. $$$
There are at least three yacht clubs. I advise that you join one of them. Each club has its own distinct mooring field. The clubs provide launch service to and from your boat.
$$$ There is the Sea Cliff Yacht Club which is farthest in from the LI Sound.
$$ Closer to open water is the Hempstead Harbour Yacht Club which isn't as "Yaghty" as Sea Cliff Y.C. is in their navy blue blazers with the brass buttons and white duck trousers.
$ For many of the regular sailors, the club of choice is the Glen Cove Yacht Club. Although it is only a short distance to open water, it is considered the best protected of the mooring fields since it is nestled under the protection of an almost mile long rock breakwater that separates the harbour from Long Island Sound. How great is this site for a safe mooring haven? In its heyday, New York Yacht Club chose this site for one of its prestigious stations. There are other amenities.
The Harbour Master will get you set up properly. He will advise you on size, weight, rode and location in the mooring pattern etc.
Good luck,
O J

I agree with OJ about Hempstead Harbour though I have some prejudice - I have relatives whom I occasionally visit that live about 2 houses away from GCYC and used to belong themselves. A nice club with prompt courteous launch service to your boat (in season-think winter here).
Good Luck ( let me know when you're in ? )
