what happened to the yawls?

I used to hang out at the Academy when I was young, watching the cadets train on the most beautiful 44' yawls. Are they still in service, or are they all into IODs now?


I still dream about yawls on account of that. Yeah, those 44s were some sweet, sweet ladies...

The Coast Guard is still racing them. Link below shows a photo from the 2008 Fall Off Soundings Race off New London.

If these are the same boats Leo, John M and I saw in 2001 or so, they are VERY spartan below. But the line are great.

Yawls

Those older yawls were Luders. several of them wound up at Great Lakes NTC back in the late eighties. They were beautiful to look at but the Navy allowed them to become totally trashed. A real shame............
