Boom Vang for Typhoon

Post by Stephen »

I was wondering if anyone out there uses a boom vang on their Typhoon. If so, what is your arrangement like? What is the best position on the mast (as low as possible probably) and boom? And is 4:1 good?

Thanks for any help.

Stephen,
I use a vang and it made worlds of difference! On the mast I used the short sail slot below the halyard sheaves. What I did was to bolt a small padeye to the slot. I used large washers that I had bent to conform to the inside curve of the slot as backing. Tricky to get the nuts on but once started they didn't need to be held as the curve of the washer held them from turning. (Nylock nuts, naturally.) Then I put a bail on the boom, just a bit further out than the point where it would be 45degrees. (45degree point just seemed too close). I use a 3:1 vang with snap shackles so I can take it off when moored in the marina. (I had to add a small stamped shackle to the padeye to get an opening large enough for the snap shackle and likewise to the bail on the boom because when angled toward the fitting on the mast there wasn't much of an opening left). Now when sailing off the wind the sail doesn't twist with the accompanying poor performance.

Serge, how did you mount your bail on the boom. Mine was originally done with one short machine bolt on each side, threaded into the boom itself. These threads had "hogged out" on one side, so I went to the expedient of a long bolt all the way thru the boom, but I think this is eggshapeing the holes in the boom. What do you suggest? There is not much meat in the boom for threads, that's the problem.

The bail I used has two holes on each side of the boom. My first thought was to use machine screws tapped into the boom through all the holes. However this presented an alignment problem to get all 4 holes in the exact location. So I used pop rivets in the two lower holes and machine screws in the two upper ones. I can detect no motion at any of the 4 mount points and feel that it is quite solid.
