What glue to use?

Post by Ryan Turner »

I just got a new set of neoprene gaskets for port windows on my CD33 from Spartan Marine. The folks at Spartan said that they just stopped making the glue that they used to use to attach them to the bronze hardware. They didn't know what to recommend. Anybody know what to use that will be friendly to and effective on neoprene?

You might also try weather stripping adhesive. It is used to glue the rubber around the edge of your car trunk and along the doors. Sticks to everything and should be fine on neoprene. Available at auto parts stores.

I have two recommendations for you. 3M makes #08008 Super Weatherstrip Adhesive in black or in pale yellow. Practice with it before doing your bonding to get used to its consistency and drying times. If used according to directions it will bond extremely well. It is available at better autobody suppliers and parts stores. Some marine stores carry it as well. Another adhesive that works extremely well is called Pliobond. It has a great reputation. The bonded components must be held under pressure until dry. That should be easy to accomplish with the ports themselves, just close them carefully. Pliobond can be found at most well stocked hardware or industrial supply stores.

Either of the two adhesives should be well suited for the neoprene gaskets. Be sure the bronze is very clean and also the gaskets before glueing. After your gaskets are glued in place I recommend you brush a lite film of talc over all the neoprene surface. It preserves and greatly improves the life of the seals and also prevents them from sticking to the porthole glass when they are opened.
