Propeller shaft assembly CD28

Post by Arthur Binning »

The propellar shaft on my CD28 is rumbling and needs inspection - before I attempt to remove the propeller shaft can anyone tell me how it was designed and assembled. It appears the shaft passes through a glass fibre tube, with no cutless bearing, only a stuffing box at the inboard end. The engine is a Volvo Penta MD2B. Could anybody with detailed information please write to me at my E-mail address - arthur@scots-land.demon.co.uk

I have a cd-28-mdb2-you have a cul lass bearing-thats a guarantee it is pressed into the hollow stern tube the shaft spins in. wether you want to replace it now or wait until the end of the year when the boats out of the water is up to you. if you don't do much motoring it should not be a problem. there are some technical issues which are discussed at length on this website. mostly you problem will be frozen nuts and bolts, lack of room to work in and all that fun crap we have to deal with. you may cosider cutting the shaft to get the coupling off and you should have the shaft examined and replaced if neccessary anyway-anything thats 10-15 years old on a boat is suspect-with a new cutlass bearing shaft and coupling youmwill have no problems well into the next century-the parts are 150-200 and the labor about the same. good luck
