i phone GPS
The new i phone comes with GPS and street charts. Does anyone know if coastal charts can be loaded on it? Does the i phone GPS work off satellites or by triangulation on cell towers?
As Chief Dan George told Dustin Hoffman in Little Big Man : Sometimes the magic works and sometimes it doesn't.
I don't know your specific answer, but . . .
My Blackberry 8130 has GPS built in, and it is very accurate, with 3 meters, it says. When it cannot receive a GPS signal, it triangulates from cell towers, but is accurate to only within about 600 meters.
With Blackberry, I had the option of paying Blackberry $10/mo for its Telenav service, or, for free, downloading Google Maps, which is able to use the GPS data to show your location. Not surprisingly, I selected Google Maps.
Anyway, I wonder if there is any comparable application that can be downloaded for the waterways.

The iphone has a real gps built in. It uses satellites and it uses towers.
For the Windows mobile phones with gps there is software like Maptec. http://www.maptech.com/products/pocketN ... /index.cfm I dont think that there is anything like that for the iphone.
I haven't tried this software. I have been looking for a free solution so that I can use my phone as a back up gps to my garmin handheld.
This is a pretty cool overlay where he took a noaa map and laid it over google. It would be great if there were a way to use this with the gps. You can zoom in using this link. http://demo.geogarage.com/noaa/

Google Maps on a Blackberry for Navigation!?!
With Markers, buoys and depth?
Tell us where and how?
I have an Blackberry 8830 with GPS (via work). I have Google Maps
Getting a navigational chart on a Blackberry would be a great backup for my Garmin.
Can you post an URL so I can get more info?
