Sumlog - Mechanical Knotmeter

Post by Walker Brown »

I just purchased a "78 CD27. The impeller is broken otherwise it appears to be in good condition. Getting replacement parts for this old technology is becoming a bigger challenge than I thought.
Appreciate any help I can get, parts advise whatever.

Sumlog- Mechanical Logmeter

Post by Emil Maurer »

I recently purchased a speed impellor replacement kit consisting of a paddle wheel, a long and short shaft, and a couple of plastic gizmos which I have no idea of the purpose of. $15

I have an '83 CD 25D which has an SIA 52 speed impeller.

The pin comes out freeing the paddle wheel. You may need some beads as bearing or spacers to adjust the placement height of the paddle wheel on the shaft if the size is not the same.

A $45 alternative is a tow behind unit called a Knotstick available at www.knotstick.com/ It works quite well and is also a good backup unit for cruising or barnacles..

What I don't have is the dummy unit you put in place when you take the Impeller out so that water does not enter thru the thruhull and sink the boat. ( Dummy Plug Assembly M26249001A )
They have been out of manufacture for a few years. If anyone knows a source or has one around I would be interested.

Walker, if you have the old mechanical Sumlog with the exterior propeller and skeg attached by a cable to the interior dial, you will have a long search for parts.

According to this British website, the impeller (actually a propeller) is now obsolete.

If you Google "VDO Sumlog" you'll find a couple of others who are trying to find spares and you might be able to contact them and see what they've come up with.

Otherwise, it may be time to cut your losses and go modern. Or do without.
