Sail Area Displacement Ratio

Post by Craig Urquhart »

I would appreciate some help understanding which numbers and units are used to calculate this ratio. My understanding is that this ratio helps describe relative livliness of a boat, but I have never been able to reproduce published numbers. Thanks in advance.

Try S/D=SA/(displ/((64.05)^2/3)) where SA= sq ft of working sails
displ=weight of boat in lbs.

S/D<14......you have a motorboat
S/D~14 to 16.5 (cruiser)
S/D>16.5....you have a racer

The reference in the subject line not only gives the formulas for many of these ratios, from SA/D to prismatic coefficient, but also does a good job of explaining their meaning in an introductory and fun way.

Craig,

You can use this sailboat calculator. It will provide you with more information than just the SA/D of your boat. Remember to convert inches (twelfths) into decimal values (tenths) before entering your data into the calculator.
