2008 Adventures?

Post by Neil Gordon »

Happy New Year!

Today is a traditional "pull out the charts" day for me and by some measure begins the official countdown to "Neil's Official Start of Summer," which is when the cover comes off on or about March 15th.

On my list of 2008 adventures:

More short sails and solitary overnights in the quiet anchorages surrounding the Boston harbor islands.

Sailing just a bit further and longer than last year.

The Buzzard's Bay rendezvous.

A delivery trip or two with my Cape Dory friends.

Training my crew so I can nap more while underway.

What's on your list?
Fair winds, Neil

Rookie Adventure List

Post by D Rush »

Great discussion thread. I was formulating goals for a successful inaugural sailing season while sitting on shrinkwrapped JAZ'D in the boatyard on Saturday morning.
My "Rookie" (first time owner) Adventure List includes:
  • Weekly day sails
One overnight with the boys (11 & 16 yr old sons)
One rendezvous with other CDSOA boats
    Visit 2 Boston Harbor Islands
Train 16 yr old son to skipper our sailboat (the blind leading the blind)
Allow 16 yr old son to skipper our sailboat (yikes!)
1 long daysail with the "Admiral" * ;-)
The CDSOA Buzzard's Bay rendezvous (stretch goal) :D

* Following wingreen's posted "Admiral" rules http://www.capedory.org/board/viewtopic ... 5&start=15

I think I've set some reasonable goals. The Buzzard's Bay Rendezvous is a long shot but I'm open to the adventure. Overall success criteria is that the whole family enjoys our CD 25!

What's nice about your list is that it's not as long as it looks when you combine the items. Day sails, harbor island visits and skipper training can all take place at the same time. Etc.

By the way, one harbor island or another can be a great overnight with the kids. It's a short sail, short row and interesting exploring, night on the anchor and a short sail back. Leave late afternoon and be back the following morning.

2008 Adventures (Talk about a pipe dream!)

Post by barfwinkle »

Depart OK on May 16 headed for the western shore of the Chesapeake arriving on or about May 19 in time to splash her that day.

Acquaint Captain, crew and boat to Chesapeake water and sights.

Depart Chesapeake Bay (via C & D Canal) in enroute to Sandy Hook and then flotilla to Oyster Bay for the July 4 Float In.

Depart Oyster Bay on July 5 cove hopping eastward with the eventual goal of making the NE Fleet Rendezvous in Buzzards Bay.

Retrieve Truck and Trailer, haul out somewhere on LIS and return to Oklahoma NLT Aug 6th!

Now that would make my day/summer/year/decade :D :D :D

Plan B: Trailer boat from Chesapeake Bay to LIS!

Plan C: Put her back on Kerr Lake

Depending on job status and family commitments (AND AS WITH ANY GRAND ADVENTURE $$$$$), we'll see

Neil & D Rush, come the end of July, keep a weather eye and look for a 25D with hailing port of Poteau, OK :D

Happy New Year

Why am I thinking that about 90% of the board would be happy to swap with you?

Bill,

While in the Chesapeake, I hope you intend to make the first cruise (sometime in mid-late May)...

Wow:D I'm so glad you're gonna try to get up our way in 2008! If you do it, we'll be waiting for you around the bend from Sandy Hook in Atlantic Highlands (or where ever you want to meet up on Raritan Bay) or maybe sail out, meet you, and escort you into lower NY Harbor (Raritan Bay). Then we can sail together to Oyster Bay. Anyway, keep us informed of your sailing plans here on the east coast.

We plan on sailing up to and cruising Maine waters again but we also intend to sail to the Northeast Fleet's rendezvous, where ever it may be. So we hope to spot a few of you out there between NJ and ME. We'll probably be out cruising for at least 8 weeks.

Happy new year,
Cathy

As we start into our 4th season in Southeast Alaska's waters:

Get out of the harbor at least once in each month of 2008 (a stretch, but did manage April through November in 2007).

A couple of 3-4 day trips, extending our family explorations beyond our 2007 1-3 day trips.

At least one week-long trip, probably down the east coast of Admiralty Island and back.

Keeping 15 year old daughter interested in sailing and exploring, making sure she gets more time at the helm as well as experience in disembarking, anchoring, and docking.

2008

Post by chase »

Hope 2008 is a good year full of adventure for everyone reading this.

I came home from the farm today and my old laser was off the trailer and 50 feet down the hill in the snow. I can sympathize with you northern folk and your true winter, we're getting a quick cameo from old man winter right now.

Steve, I can't get my 12 year old daughter to skip school next week to sail to Cumberland Island with my wife and 9 year old son. She's a solid first mate, just very serious about school already. She'll stay with a friend while we go sailing.

2008 plans:

Next week: Cumberland Island for 5 days

February: Cumberland Island and maybe St Augustine.

Summer: Same stuff, with family if it isn't too hot down there. Otherwise haulout and prepare for next trip.

November: Abaco, Bahamas through February 09.

December: Christmas in the Bahamas.

After that, north to Chesapeake for summer 09, then headed to Maine for summer 2010. I know you only asked for 08 but thought I'd give you plenty of notice I'll be passing through New England. After all of the plotting on Buzzards Bay for USPS, I might recognize something.

Russell, Where ya headed?

Take Care All,

Chase

Puffin is going to Lake Superior!

Post by Dave H »

I have taken on three mooring partners, and we're moving Puffin up to Lake Superior. We will transition from inland lake sailing to Great Lakes Sailing. We find the prospect thrilling and sobering. We have lots of respect for Gitche Gumi. Puffin will be at Barker's Island Marina in Superior, Wisconsin. We like the access to the twin cities, and we'll start with daysailing, and weekend cruises. We plan to sail or haul Puffin over to the Apostle Islands for an anual cruise. One of my partners has a Typhoon on a local lake. Our plan is to share both boats.

Very Modest Plans

Post by Carl Thunberg »

Frankly, I'll be happy just to get launched. Before tucking Leona Pearl in for the winter, I gutted the galley, pulled all the old outdated electronics, and pulled the teak coamings off so I could work on them in my shop this winter. If I can put her back together in the manner she deserves, and update all the electronics, I'll be lucky to launch before mid-July.

In the short season left, my goals are to circumnavigate Cape Cod (just 'cuz it's there) and participate in as many NE Fleet activities as I can.

Retired!

Post by Dick Barthel »

I just retired today so I should have more time for cruising. There will be time for lots more solo practice in the spring. I will finally be able to make the 4th of July celebration in Oyster Bay and I plan to solo to the Buzzards Bay event. I also plan to help bring a good friend's CD33 down the Hudson and up to Maine.

Neil, all this of course to help make me a better mate for the Regatta in September!

Happy New Year!

Dick
