ID Hose for Scupper Drains

Post by Jerome »

I launched my Cape Dory Typhoon for the first time today. It was quite exhilerating to see this really great-looking boat in the water for the first time.

One thing has been gnawing at the back of my mind though. I replaced the thru-hull and ball-valve fittings a few weeks ago, and I think I did a pretty good job. However, I'm not sure I used the correct ID hose. What I bought is called 'ID water exhaust hose', it has a rubberized interior with a coated fabric exterior. Sandwiched between those 2 materials is a length of wire which is set up in a spiral inside the hose.

Has anyone used this kind of hose for their scupper drains, and is it the right kind? My worry is that if I leave the valves open when I leave the boat to let rain and water drain through, the hoses will fail sinking the boat. Before leaving it at the mooring today I closed the valves just in case: we won't be having any rain for the next 3 to 4 days.

We just replaced our scupper hoses a couple of weeks ago and used the same type hose. (My husband had one heck of a time getting the hose on the fittings! I heard words I didn't even know he knew!) He put double hose clamps on each end. So far, so good.
