Early returns from the NE Fleet Rendezvous

I went down to Essex, CT for the day yesterday to check out the NE Fleet Rendezvous. We had a picnic cruise to Hamburg Cove followed by a Cape Dory boat show at the Connecticut River Museum. It was hotter than Hades but everyone was having a great time. Kudos to Joe Montana, Bob Emmons and Cathy Monaghan for putting this together and thanks to the McDonalds for hosting me aboard Evening Light. No doubt others will have better photos but here are a few I snapped to whet your appetite.

Hi All,

Joe (Chair) & Diane Montana (Ty ‘First Light’) and the Rendezvous Committee (Dick Barthel, Bob Emmons, Cathy Monaghan and others I do not know – please fill this in Joe) have done an outstanding job. A well planned and executed Cape Dory Rendezvous!!
I appreciate everything the Rendezvous Committee did to make a spectacular 3 day event.

I'm sorry I missed you all! I just finished repowering my CD 28. Wasn't ready in time. Getting a late start this year (August 1st), but plan on making up for lost time!

If anyone is visiting RI waters this Summer or Fall, drop me a line.

Had a great time at Essex - Joe, Dick, Bob & everyone else did a great job! Busy & fun - inspite of the heat!

What a great rendezvous! Congratulations and thanks to Joe Montana, Dick Barthels, Bob Emmons and everybody else involved in organizing the event. Essex was a great venue for the gathering.

Creme Brulee, Lynne and I made it back to the mooring in Squeteague Harbor late Friday afternoon. The trip back didn't involve navigating blind through fog, but light winds continued to plague us through Long Island Sound, along with attacks by some very determined deer flies. We spent the first night of the return trip in the Harbor of Refuge at Pt. Judith -- what a rolly anchorage that turned out to be!

The sail from there to Cuttyhunk was wonderful, and we reached the island in time to catch the next-to-last mooring outside the pond. We also witnessed an incredible race for the last mooring. Two boats played chicken until the last possible moment. It was more like trying to grab a parking spot in downtown Boston than sailboat cruising. I was rooting for the classic boat, but the Beneteau's larger engine won the day.

Final sail was mostly wing-on-wing up Buzzards Bay, with a final hair-raising downwind leg into Megansett Harbor as the wind hit about 25 knots with the region's famous square waves.

Lynne has proclaimed this her last extended cruise, although she really enjoyed meeting all the Cape Dorians and seeing Essex. I think she would have enjoyed it more if we had allowed a bit more time for the trip.

I've put an autopilot at the top of my things-to-buy list!

Joe,
I think we were anchored at Cuttyhunk the same night. We were on a Freedom 40, with 2 black masts, in the outside harbor about 2 boats behind a CD25D. It must have been the two of you.

We had a great time visiting with CD'ers in Essex and looking at the various boats.

Yes, you were anchored behind us, near the fishing club and Canapitsit Channel.

Did you happen to see the game of chicken for the last mooring that played out between a Beneteau and a Hinckley? It was an amazing display of nastiness on the part of the Bene.

Sorry Lynne and I didn't realize that was your boat.

We returned from our summer cruise last night to our home port of Tom's River. My family and I had a wonderful time aboard Red Wing the past three weeks! I want to thank all of our membership for a great showing at Essex and especially Joe Montana and Dick Barthel for orchestrating this rendezvous! It is always so nice to see all of our NE Fleet family a few days every summer, and this year at Essex proved to be a wonderful choice. We loved Hamburg Cove so much that we went back to this bucolic place and anchored for the evening, with plenty of swimming, food and drink!
We must start to think about next year....how about southern Buzzards Bay and the Islands........

Leo, in response to your earlier post, Dick Barthel was instrumental each step of the way as we planned and executed the rendezvous, and he is also the one who made the boat show happen. Sally Perreten took charge of the music, which added so much to the event. Ann Barthel and Diane planned and shopped for the food for the welcome BBQ (thanks to Bruce for acting as chef). And, of course, everyone recognizes how successfully Cathy is at acquiring "good stuff" from sponsors, but they probably don't know that this year Cathy and Bruce made a special trip up to Essex prior to the event to drop it all off in advance; there was just too much this year to load onto Realization! Lastly, thanks to Bob Emmons and you for giving Diane and me the chance to be involved in this way (honest). Bob's enthsuiasm is contageous, and there was never an idea our planning group came up with that he didn't encourage!
