Staysail boom?

Post by russkendall »

Hi:

Our CD30c appears to have all the necessary deck hardware to use a staysail boom, excepting the minor impediment of not actually having the boom itself.

I've heard from people I respect that a staysail boom is evil and dangerous. I've also heard from other people I respect that it is a handy, dandy thing to have.

I guess I'd like to find out for myself what it's like to sail with one. So I'm reaching out to to list members to see if anyone can point me in the direction of a used staysail boom.

Best,

Russ Kendall

If all you are missing is the boom I would think finding a suitable replacement would not be that difficult. I suspect that the original was a Spartan Spar check the Rigrite web site. Maybe another owner can give you the length and identify the spar section. You may also be able to get a similar spar from Dwyer Mast or someone closer to you on the west coast. You could also probably adapt a main boom or mast from a smaller boat, probably something in the 20-25ft range I would guess. Scrap metal prices are high but watch eBay and Craigs list!
