Fair price Typhoon

Post by Richard Bell »

I am considering the purchase of a typhoon, but prices for these are all over the map. I have searched the archives but was hoping you all out there can throw me some numbers and give me a fair price to offer.

1974 18 foot Ty daysailer (with the ports)
New standing and running rigging
no trailer
electric trolling motor bad battery no engine
some life jackets/safety gear ground tackle
wood and hull/deck paint sunfaded
sails good to above average
no sponge or water issues
no interior cushions or "fluff" - bare boat

Any help appreciated! If I forgot to mention anything please ask!

Thanks.

trailer makes the sale

Post by wingreen »

When I was on the market for a Ty a few months back, I considered the trailer to be a huge part of the package, but I was willing to buy one without if the price was right.

I might have gone up to $2,000 for the boat you describe, knowing that I'd have to sink another $1000 - $1500 for the trailer, and a few hundred more for "Plan B" stuff before I could put her in the water.

Alot has to do with the age of the boat as well as its condition, if it has a trailer, if it has an outboard and the age and condition of the outboard as well as its HP, and if you'll be getting any of the gear too. So yes, you'll see prices all over the map.

clarification

Post by Richard Bell »

Nope no motor or trailer.

Kinda was hoping you all would throw some number ranges at me. I could then sort of average them out and make the guy an offer which would have some real basis, along with of course the averages on the other web services ie boattrader, yachtworld nada etc....

This is only a guesstimate, but the average is probably somewhere around $5000 with the Tys manufactured in the 70s generally being less than $5000 and Tys manufactured in the 80s generally being more than $5000 -- plus or minus $ for condition.

$2000 would be a really good deal, $3000 a fair price I think.

78 vice 73.....thanks Mike for the input!

I have had a 30 and currently a 33. I am a novice on the ty. My son is getting into CD's and I really want him and the current owner to get a a fair deal!

For what it's worth, http://www.nadaguides.com is like Kelly Blue Book and has a section for boats, trailers and outboards. A lot depends on the overall condition, as others have mentioned, but it does provide you with a starting point.

Is it really a daysailer? I didn't know it came with ports. nadaguides doesn't list the daysailer for that year. The weekender listing quotes $2270 - 2540 depending on condition.

I suspected it was a weekender vice daysailer. Again, I am new to Tys.

I looked at the NADA numbers but they seemed off (low) from the other sites I researched.

Thank you for your input, more the better.

In the identification number, the Weekender has a "D" after the "CPD"; the fully open model has a "G" and the model with an open cuddy has a "K"...."
