Broken Motor Mount - CD33 - Universal 5424

Post by Ryan Turner »

I've been slowly doing all those things that you're supposed to do to get your engine ready for a new season. This weekend I set out to check the alignment of my engine and discovered a broken motor mount. All the things I've read suggest checking your motor mounts once in awhile. They also say that nobody ever does it. Well, when I checked mine guess what I found. Yep, the front mount was broken clean through. When I finally got it out it was clear that it had been broken for quite a long time. Now I've got to replace it. I think I'll let a mechanic fix this one (can't wait to get the bill!). Just thought everyone might benefit from a reminder to check your motor mounts.

....guess what I found. Yep, the front mount was broken clean through.

That is very interesting. Last summer we also found that our front mount was broken clean through. Our CD33 was built in 1983. We also have the 5424 engine with the Hurth gearbox.

We found our broken mount only after the shaft broke. We have no idea how long the mount had been broken or why it should break. (Fortunately the three bladed prop can't get past the rudder and therefore the shaft didn't slip all the way out.)

It was easy to see that the mount was broken by lifting the front of the engine while the shaft wasn't connected. Is it that easy to see when the shaft adds rigidity?

It was also interesting to see that after the mechanic replaced the shaft and the front mount, he forgot to secure the starboard mount. I was glad I had reached under to check before leaving the boatyard's float for the trip home. I don't know if that would also have resulted in damage to the shaft.
